Abstract

This thesis examines how the Play of Brilliants lighting concept can be combined with biophilic design to recreate sun glitter as an indoor light experience that strengthens people’s connection to nature. The guiding research question asks how Play of Brilliants and Biophilic Design can be merged to mimic the natural sun glitter phenomenon through lighting. The study employs a sequence of Move-Testing Experiments: (1) a theoretical comparison of Play of Brilliants and biophilia to identify shared nature-related qualities; (2) an analysis of eight PoB examples (four outdoor, four indoor) to assess the impact of natural context on perceived effects; (3) field observations of sun glitter at waterside locations with photo documentation, image processing, and sketching to extract visual patterns; and (4) controlled light experiments in a dark room using dynamic brightness, color temperature, and colored illumination on textured glass materials, supported by measurements and photography. Findings indicate that natural context is crucial to the feelings evoked by PoB, and are synthesized into design criteria and guidelines that culminate in a conceptual indoor lighting proposal interpreting sun glitter as a biophilic Play of Brilliants solution. The results suggest multiple design directions, with the proposed concept illustrating one path and demonstrating a practical method for translating a natural light phenomenon into the built environment to support psychological well-being.
