Abstract
Gender Training for officers in the Danish Army up to the rank of Major has been subject to resistance mainly from older male officers. The purpose of this dissertation is to identify both the origin and the extent of the expressed resistance in order to determine whether the resistance can be considered a threat to the aim of reducing Sexual Harassment (SH) in the Danish Army but also to ensure appropriate action when SH is identified. A Case Study utilizing Mixed Methods as research method, specifically a Survey and a Focus Group Interview, was used with the Danish Army as the Case. The dissertation concludes that hegemonic hyper masculinity is omnipresent in the Danish Army on both individual and organizational level causing resistance to Gender Mainstreaming efforts as such, but particularly visible in relation to ongoing Gender Training. Although masculinity is permeating the Danish Army, resistance is mostly recognized among older male officers who seem more biased than their younger male officer colleagues. Younger male officers appear to acknowledge the hegemonic masculinity to a larger extent and thus seem to embrace Gender Training as Leadership training. Cultural changes in preventing and handling SH will not come quickly in a hyper masculine organization; however, if the Danish Army implements masculinity reducing measures, such as minimizing the highly sexualized tone and combat narratives, a change in the hegemonic masculine culture may succeed over time, especially as younger male officers seem more aware of the inherent masculinity and thus may be more prone to support Gender Mainstreaming.
