Abstract
This thesis examines what shapes people’s intention to visit Nepal’s Baraha region, especially among those living nearby (proximate tourists). It applies the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB), which considers how attitudes, subjective norms (perceived social expectations), and perceived behavioral control (how easy or difficult a person thinks the trip will be) influence intentions. The study also includes destination image and prior visit experience. A mixed-method design combined an online survey and email interviews. The survey used five-point Likert-scale questions to measure TPB factors, prior experience, and perceptions of the Baraha region’s image; 427 responses were analyzed using structural equation modeling (SEM). Structured email interviews were examined through thematic analysis. Findings show that all factors were positively related to intention to visit. In order of influence, perceived behavioral control had the strongest effect, followed by destination image, prior experience as a proximate tourist, attitude toward the region, and subjective norms. The interviews supported these patterns, emphasizing that a favorable image and previous nearby visits encourage people to go. Participants expressed high confidence in managing travel logistics, which increased their intention to visit the Baraha region.
