This project examines how young people who have been placed in foster care or residential institutions, or who have had a mentor, are supported in their transition to adult life. The focus is on how both the young people and social workers understand the concepts of independent adulthood and positive development, and how these understandings both overlap and differ. Existing research shows that socially disadvantaged young people generally have fewer resources for managing adult life than their peers, which is a central reason for offering youth support. At the same time, the transition to adulthood is seen as a gradual process in which different personal and practical skills are developed over time. Challenges arise when the legislation on youth support is experienced as unclear and does not match the young people’s actual needs. Research also indicates that there is often a gap between how young people and social workers understand independence and positive development, and that relatively open legislation can reinforce this gap. The project therefore investigates both the understandings of young people and social workers, and the role of the framework conditions in which the work takes place (for example law, organization, and economy). Our study is based on an abductive and hermeneutic approach. We conducted qualitative, semi-structured interviews with both young people and social workers and analyzed the material using hermeneutic text analysis. The coding was organized into four themes: independent adulthood, positive development, framework structures and social workers’ assessments, and the interaction between young people and social workers. The results show that understandings of independent adulthood and positive development vary between young people and social workers, and are influenced by the young people’s habitus and forms of capital (such as social and economic resources). The young participants often associate independence with living on their own, handling everyday tasks, and knowing where to seek help. Social workers, by contrast, emphasize a gradual increase in responsibility, building practical skills, and working with boundaries. The transition to adulthood appears as a complex, step-by-step process shaped by the young people’s habitus and capital and by the field’s doxa (common norms and assumptions). Social workers’ perspectives are further shaped by legal, organizational, and economic framework conditions, which can create conflicting demands and cross-pressures. This may contribute to the development of various defensive mechanisms in social work practice. Clear and adapted communication and relationships between young people and social workers are therefore crucial to supporting a meaningful transition to adult life. In conclusion, the project shows that the transition to adulthood is a long and complex process in which support is continuously adjusted to help young people participate in and cope with independent adult life. This transition is shaped by the young people’s habitus and capital, social workers’ assessments, the structural framework conditions, and the interaction between young people and social workers. The project suggests that Denmark could strengthen this area by changing the approach in Socialrådgiveruddannelsen so that young people are by default entitled to youth support, and any refusal must be justified. Raising the age limit for support could better reflect the actual pace of young people’s development. Finally, standardized information material for young people could improve their understanding, reduce uncertainty, and promote a more holistic approach. Overall, this area has significant potential to secure a safer, more coherent, and sustainable path into adulthood for vulnerable young people.
