Dette speciale undersøger, om og hvordan nostalgi påvirker det danske metalmiljøs modtagelse af nye, populære og genrekrydsende metalacts i en scene, der ofte beskriver sig selv som inkluderende. Med afsæt i den aktuelle debat om bands som Sleep Token formuleres problemstillingen: Reproducerer det danske metalmiljø konstruktioner om musiksmag, genre og nostalgi, og hvordan påvirker disse konstruktioner modtagelsen af nytænkende stilretninger i metal? Undersøgelsen bygger på en ontologisk konstruktivistisk og hermeneutisk tilgang, en deduktiv ramme og kvalitative, semistrukturerede interviews med nøgleaktører i miljøet: Mirza Radonjica (Siamese/Prime Collective), Anders Bøtter (Sort Søndag), Jürgen Timpel McDonald (Aalborg Rock og Metal) og Anne Olesen (Danefae). Analysen anvender teori af Pierre Bourdieu, Howard S. Becker, Sarah Thornton og Jennifer C. Lena til at belyse smag, felt, subkulturel kapital og genreudvikling. Specialet konkluderer, at det danske metalmiljø faktisk reproducerer forestillinger om genre, musiksmag og nostalgi, og at disse i betydelig grad former, hvordan ny, populær metal bliver modtaget. Nostalgi fungerer både som følelsesmæssig tilknytning til fortiden og som et regulativt sæt normer for, hvad der tæller som “legitim” metal; ældre publikum anvender nostalgi som en konservativ målestok, mens yngre publikummer og musikere bruger den refleksivt og kreativt. Dette spændingsfelt er med til at udfordre konventioner og kan skubbe scenen mod nye definitioner af, hvad metal kan være.

This thesis examines whether and how nostalgia shapes the Danish metal scene’s reception of new, popular, genre-blending metal acts within a community that often presents itself as inclusive. Motivated by current debate around bands like Sleep Token, the research asks: Does the Danish metal scene reproduce constructions of musical taste, genre, and nostalgia, and how do these constructions affect the reception of innovative metal styles? The study adopts an ontological constructivist and hermeneutic approach within a deductive design and draws on qualitative, semi-structured interviews with key actors: Mirza Radonjica (Siamese/Prime Collective), Anders Bøtter (Sort Søndag), Jürgen Timpel McDonald (Aalborg Rock og Metal), and Anne Olesen (Danefae). The analysis uses theoretical lenses from Pierre Bourdieu, Howard S. Becker, Sarah Thornton, and Jennifer C. Lena to explore taste, fields, subcultural capital, and genre development. The thesis concludes that the Danish metal scene does reproduce constructions of genre, musical taste, and nostalgia, and that these significantly influence how new, popular metal is received. Nostalgia operates both as an emotional attachment to the past and as a regulative framework for what counts as “legitimate” metal; older audiences tend to apply it as a conservative yardstick, while younger audiences and musicians use it as reflective, creative inspiration. These tensions both challenge conventions and open space for redefining what metal can be in Denmark.
