Abstract
In this master thesis we are looking to research the mental well-being of HF students. We have found that throughout the public debate there is an agenda of the competitive state being pushed and the idea that students in secondary education must study harder and faster to secure a future and become valuable citizens of our society. Through research done by the Danish Ministry of Children and Education, it is found that HF students have a lower rating, than STX, of how much they enjoy going to school. There has also been lots of earlier research and debates about the well-being of younger people, but with different focuses. Most research focuses on the younger people that are in some kind of secondary education, mostly STX and between the ages of 16-25. This research has focused on students and young people in general social and educational well-being. At the same time the research often found that the student’s well-being is something that is being observed as individuals. Therefore, we want to research the well-being of HF students, and how this could have an impact on their education. We are using theoretical ideas from Erving Goffman and Hartmut Rosa. From Goffman we are using his theory of stigmatizing, front- and backstage. From Hartmut Rosa we are taking his theory of time and accelerations. By using these two theoretical standpoints we get to see the HF student’s well-being from a social aspect and a perspective of their understanding of time. The research is done by surveys with up to 69 students and interviews with 7 students. The students we have through a collaboration with two secondary schools, Nørresundby Gymnasium and HF, and Viborg Gymnasium. In our study we have found that our results match up very well with earlier studies. We found that the HF students and their time are defined by a need for time, and a feeling of not being able to get everything done in one day. We also found that the student’s social well-being is being defined by the era that we live in, where the technological advancements have created new ways of being social and define the way young people spend time together. At the same time the students are feeling pressure to be available all day, every day. This need is being described as an addiction to being available to communication. This new way of being social all the time therefore has the potential to threaten the front- and backstage of the HF students. All in all, this acceleration of being social and the threat to the front- and backstage, could potentially be a threat to the students’ time in secondary education.
