Abstract

This project highlights the benefits of working in 3D during the early phases of urban design. These phases have often lacked 3D analysis and tools, which can lead to less suitable urban interventions. The Toolbox is a quick and easy digital design tool that enables designers to sketch ideas in three dimensions from the start of a project. It helps communicate concepts in a way most people can understand, even without training in reading architectural drawings, opening the design discussion to more participants. This is possible because the Toolbox virtually imitates how humans perceive space through embodiment—showing space as it is experienced from a human perspective. The project included a three-week study trip to Sisimiut, Greenland, in collaboration with the municipal planning division. During the visit, the project received press attention and was shown on the national news program Quanorooq on April 10, 2008 (see Appendix 3 for the clip).
