Abstract

This master thesis aims to study the role of the music therapist in social psychiatry. The study is based on my 9th semester internship at Aktivitets- og UdviklingsCenter Grenå, an outpatient mental health care for socializing and activities for adults in social psychiatry in Denmark. In this thesis I investigate the role of the music therapist, when working outside established therapeutic settings, and the coherency between the role of the therapist, in relation to working between a community music therapy approach and a psychodynamic approach. Alongside an integrative review of music therapy in social psychiatry, I present theory about Recovery, community music therapy, psychodynamic music therapy and how feelings and emotions are significant in the work as a music therapist in social psychiatry. The study is based on a qualitative approach, and the data is collected using an autoethnographic method. Data consists of six autoethnographic narratives, based on my own experiences from my internship. The six narratives were analyzed through an inductive approach to thematic coding. Through categorizing of the codes, themes and sub-themes emerged from the data. Based on the findings, music therapy outside established therapeutic settings, can be divided into five rooms. The first room is completely closed. Behind a closed door, only the music therapist and one participant are present. The rooms gradually become more open, where the door is opened to other participants and more people participate in the music therapy. In the closed room, the music therapy is process oriented, where the music therapist adjusts the music therapy to the emotional state of the participant. In the open rooms, the music therapy becomes more product and performance oriented, where community and social coping strategies become significant. The conclusion of the thesis is that the role of the music therapist in social psychiatry can be described in a continuum, in which the role of the music therapist can have a psychodynamic character, where a dynamic process makes it possible for the music therapist to adjust the music therapy to the participants emotional state and articulate feelings and emotions, and on the other side of the continuum the role of the music therapist seems to be approached on community music therapy, where product and performance are center of the music therapy, to create social and shared coping strategies. I assume that music therapy in social psychiatry, in many cases, are somewhere on the continuum, where the music therapist must tune in to both the surrounding settings, and his/her role in the music therapy.
