Abstract
Esports is currently being taught as part of the school curiculum in many different educational con-texts with widely different learning purposes, this project sets out to better understand what is at the core of teaching esports in an educational context. It does so through analysis of interviews with expe-rienced teachers of esports in educational contexts – the interviews center around understanding their view of the learning potential of the field, and their preferred methods of teaching. I analyze the inter-views using the concept of “Framing” as described by the esteemed sociologist Erving Goffman, to better understand the lens with which the teachers view the field. With the method thematic analysis, I seek to describe the core similarities and distinctions between the teachers – these are listed into three distinct themes. Some of the key findings of the project involve the description of the “playful-serous continuum” which describes the framing of which the teacher views the field, some see it primarily to introduce more fun, play and a new way to form friendships. The other extreme sees it as a way to work laser focused on performing demanding teamwork and perfect execution of tasks. The report concludes with an introduction of 7 specific design principles that any teacher of esports in an educa-tional context should consider implementing. The goal of the project is to deliver real descriptions of authentic situations from experienced professionals, in order further the advancement of the field of esportsdidactics.
