Abstract

Denne afhandling undersøger, hvad brugeroplevelse (UX) betyder – altså hvordan mennesker oplever og føler, når de bruger digitale produkter og tjenester – og hvordan begrebet anvendes af både forskere og praktikere, der designer eller evaluerer interaktive systemer. Målet er at følge, hvordan forståelsen af UX har udviklet sig i de senere år, at beskrive feltet set fra begge grupper, og at undersøge deres samarbejde og oplevelse af et fælles fagligt fællesskab. Udgangspunktet er en oplevelse af et tydeligt gab mellem industri og akademia. Afhandlingen bygger på to studier. For det første en systematisk litteraturgennemgang af akademiske publikationer om UX fra 1998 til 2017, hvor 565 artikler blev kategoriseret efter, hvordan de behandler UX, og hvilke kilder de refererer til. Der blev identificeret tendenser i både de udvalgte artikler og den refererede litteratur, og de ti mest citerede artikler blev analyseret mere indgående. For det andet et interviewstudie med otte deltagere, der arbejder med UX i industri og akademia ved forskellige danske virksomheder og universiteter. Resultaterne fra de to studier blev sammenholdt. This thesis examines what user experience (UX) means—how people feel and interact when using digital products and services—and how the term is used by researchers and practitioners who design or evaluate interactive systems. It aims to track how the understanding of UX has evolved in recent years, to describe the field from both perspectives, and to assess their collaboration and sense of a shared community. The starting point is a perceived gap between industry and academia. Two studies were conducted. First, a systematic literature review of academic publications on UX from 1998 to 2017, in which 565 papers were categorized by how they address UX and which sources they cite. Trends were identified in both the selected papers and the referenced literature, and the ten most cited papers were analyzed in greater depth. Second, an interview study with eight participants working with UX in industry and academia at various Danish companies and universities. The results of the two studies were compared. The findings generally align with prior research. A gap is clearly present between some researchers and practitioners, while others have ties to both worlds. Overall, the two sides make limited use of each other’s knowledge and literature. Education appears to be an important driver of collaboration. Regarding the UX concept itself, there is little agreement on a single definition. Despite many years of extensive research, there is still no shared understanding. The thesis suggests that future work should classify and map the definitions currently in use to make patterns of understanding explicit and help bridge the gap.
