Abstract

Abstract This thesis in Applied Philosophy is about the relevance of C. G. Jung, yet it holds a photo of the bunny ‘Mimmer’ on the front page. The reason is that I find ‘Mimmer’ more attractive than Jung and that I as did Jung feel an affiliation with animals and Mimmer in particular - maybe due to shared psychic instincts. Out of respect to Jung (and ‘Mimmer’) I wish to put Jung to the test, by asking the question: How may C. G. Jung be relevant in a philosophical context? In my experience, the models and theories of Jung are rarely applied in philosophy. In general, Freud is the preferred point of reference for deep psychology. The Slovenian School represented by Zizek is a case in point. For that reason, the main goal of this examination is to test the relevance of Jung in opposition to Zizek. However, to arrive at this point I will explain the thoughts of Jung, how he differs from Freud and explore his philosophical grounding relating to Kant and Schopenhauer, on whose shoulders he stands, as well as his contemporary Wittgenstein. At first glance, this might seem an impossible task. For the same reason I have developed a particular method called ‘All in One’ to help me get safely through the procedure. It encompasses the spheres or ideas of ‘The Self’, ‘The phenomenal World’ and ‘God’ as an Ur-Grund. The three spheres may be regarded as complete ways of considering ‘The All’ or everything in their own right as well as together - depending on the point of view in question. This leads me to the conclusion that not only does Jung stand up to Zizek. In fact, they may be considered ‘brothers in crime’. The ultimate difference is, that Jung found evidence that the self as a unity of the conscious and the unconscious encompasses forces that strive towards a balance and a more united whole self and as such healing. Zizek may not agree to this. I will leave it to you, the reader, to draw your own conclusion.
