Abstract
This thesis sets out with the intent of examining how and to which degree religion is portrayed in Danish museums of cultural history. With a thorough discussion surrounding a definition of the term cultural heritage and the theories about the processes of culturalized religion, a number of museum exhibitions, mainly in Copenhagen, was visited and analysed through the themes, chronology and structure, objects and texts, culturalized religion and modernity. It was proved that the majority of museums failed in their portrayal of religion, both in terms of representing the religious diversity of the current Danish population and exhibiting religion as an independent subject stripped of its cultural connotations. The fault lay partly with the museum staff, who let their own interests and fear of dividing the population and creating controversy influence their work, but also with the ministry of culture and their absence of a clear definition of cultural heritage. Therefor the responsibility of the museums in this regard were op for interpretation, and because the Danish society is heavily influenced by the concept of culturalized religion, this also affected how minority religions were portrayed. To conclude, this thesis provides a solution on how museums can integrate religion more appropriately.
