Abstract

This master’s thesis was inspired from new research about the mutual dependency between materiality and humans, and from a political wish to demolish exposed residential areas with new residential types. Then appealing to mixed individuals and build a new social environment. Hence, research from Netherland contradicts the social interplay since people are too different. Based on this knowledge, the phenomenon of the influence of the materiality on mobility and social interaction, was investigated more closely from a micro sociological perspective through residents’ daily life. The empirical study takes form from the Danish city Kokkedal, including the residential areas; Birkehaven, Blåbærhaven and Nordengen, that is not exposed, but fits the materiality types and has existed for decades. The phenomenology philosophy contributed with an understanding of the body’s actions and the mind’s experiences from Maurice Merleau-Ponty’s perspective. Also, social constructivism was chosen to understand the world as being social constructed through humans’ daily life. The methodological approach was characterized by explor-atory study, qualitative methodology, grounded theory, the inspiration for empiricalization, walking interview, interview guide, the recruitment process, data compilation, inter-viewing, participatory observation, transcribing, method integration, open coding and bricolage for the design of the analysis, to create a systematic handling of empiricism through empirical categories, but also investigate what was new knowledge. Then the abductive process was described followed by methodological reflections and criticisms. By using Mimi Sheller, John Urry, Timothy Beatley and Kirsten Simonsen’s theoretical perspectives on the mobility, space, meanings of the place and the subjective body, a new empirical insight into the phenomenon was found. Some residents deliberately deselected to meet new acquaintances but some came with solutions that would allow them to interact with each other across the residential areas.
