Abstract
This thesis delves into the initial phase of the Israel-Palestine conflict from the 1930s, the climax on May 14, 1948, and the remainder of that year, when Israel was proclaimed as a nation-state. The year 1948 is a focal point in the historiography of the conflict, leading to a mythologization of the events surrounding Israel, state formation, and the Palestinian exodus. Since then, many Palestinian historians have attempted to revise the established historical explanation by challenging the traditional understanding of Israel's state formation. With the emergence of “The New Historiography,” this revisionist interpretation has been supported by an empirical basis, serving as a counterpoint to conventional historiography. Although it is widely recognized, not all historians agree on every aspect of this reinterpretation. The issue of “transfer”, intention, and the right to return of refugees is still widely debated among historians. A detailed investigation and analysis of these topics are conducted in this thesis. To achieve historical contemporaneity, the historians' arguments and source materials will be illuminated and compared. It will also be examined how the source material and historians' claims and arguments confirm or refute the assertion of ethnic cleansing.
