Specialet undersøger betydningen af rummelighed i psykologers kliniske arbejde med fokus på, hvordan klinikere forstår rummelighed i mødet med klienten, og hvilke forhold der kan påvirke den. Afhandlingen bygger på et empirisk grundlag bestående af fire kvalitative interviews med praktiserende psykologer i Danmark og er primært psykodynamisk orienteret. Teoretisk inddrages bidrag fra bl.a. Freud og Rogers samt tre hovedreferencer: Otto F. Kernberg (egoidentifikation), Thomas H. Ogden (projektiv identifikation) og Daniel N. Stern (det nuværende øjeblik og intersubjektivitet). Analysen er interviewbaseret og struktureres tematisk (template-udvikling). Rummelighed fremstår som et komplekst begreb, der ikke let lader sig oversætte, og som især rummer tre aspekter: relation, forståelse og evnen til at bære/containe klientens følelser. Resultaterne peger på, at rummelighed primært er en holdning frem for en metode eller teknik, og at den kan understøtte effektiv behandling af svære problematikker. De forhold, der ifølge klinikerne kan influere på rummelighed, omfatter bl.a. klinikerens relationelle holdning og grænsesætning, personlighed og privatliv, relationelle dynamikker som projektiv identifikation og splitting, samt rammefaktorer som supervision, egenterapi, faglige fællesskaber, behandlingsvilkår og overgangen fra studie til praksis. Emnet placeres i en aktuel faglig debat, hvor relationelt orienterede tilgange opleves trængt af metoder med mindre fokus på relationen, og hvor klinikerens egen smertegrænse kan få behandlingsmæssige konsekvenser.

This thesis examines the role of rummelighed in psychologists’ clinical work, focusing on how clinicians understand it in encounters with clients and which factors may influence it. The study is based on four qualitative interviews with practicing psychologists in Denmark and is primarily informed by a psychodynamic orientation. The theoretical frame draws on Freud and Rogers and centers on three key contributors: Otto F. Kernberg (ego identification), Thomas H. Ogden (projective identification), and Daniel N. Stern (the present moment and intersubjectivity). The interview analysis is organized thematically (template development). Rummelighed is a complex Danish term that does not translate easily and is described by clinicians as comprising three aspects: the relationship, understanding, and the capacity to contain the client’s feelings. Findings indicate that rummelighed is best understood as an attitude rather than a method or technique, and that it can support effective treatment of difficult issues. Clinicians point to multiple influences on rummelighed, including the therapist’s relational stance and boundary setting, personality and private life, relational dynamics such as projective identification and splitting, and contextual factors like supervision, personal therapy, collegial settings, treatment conditions, and the transition from study to practice. The topic is situated within current debates where relationally oriented approaches are perceived as being displaced by methods with less focus on the therapeutic relationship, and where clinicians’ own pain thresholds may affect treatability.
