Abstract
This study examines how UK newspapers portrayed refugees, asylum seekers and immigrants (RASIM) around the 2015 Parliamentary elections, when Europe saw a sharp rise in asylum applications and migration dominated public debate. The election period was chosen because the so‑called migrant crisis strengthened anti‑immigration positions among many right‑wing parties in Europe, making media narratives especially influential. To analyze this coverage, the study applies the theory of 'new racism' (Baker), which focuses on subtle forms of exclusion and the process of othering expressed through language, and Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) with a discourse‑historical approach (Wodak), which examines texts in their social and political contexts to uncover underlying ideologies. These methods made it possible to identify and deconstruct negative ideologies and racist discourses in the news. The analysis finds that UK media discourse about RASIM in 2015 was both socially constitutive and socially conditioned—that is, it helped shape public attitudes and policy debates while also reflecting the social and political climate of the time. Different media outlets drew on different ideologies and contexts, producing varying images of refugees, asylum seekers and immigrants.
