Abstract
In this master’s thesis, I investigate the formation of an alliance with at risk youth with the aim of aiding them in achieving development. An interview study was conducted with two informants, followed by a hermeneutic-phenomenological grounded theory analysis. The analysis resulted in the development of a model called the Goal Pyramid. The Goal Pyramid delineates different levels of goals that are relevant to work with when dealing with at risk youth. The goals in the pyramid include "basic needs," "closeness/relationship building," "responsibility," and "self-understanding." Additionally, music therapy interventions were identified to help strengthen relationship building and alliance formation. These methods include music communication, improvisational music therapy, receptive music therapy, and music education. One limitation of the study is that the theory used in the analysis pertains to alliance formation with adults and not youth. However, it was assessed that the context-specific knowledge produced by the thesis is reliable and valid. Finally, it was concluded that the Goal Pyramid could be a useful tool for navigating the various types of goals that can be worked on. Additionally, it was concluded that relationship building is an important element of the alliance, as it can foster progress in a developmental process.
