Abstract

Food for consumption must go through a series of processes before it can be sold to consumers. These processes, when done manually, are labor and cost intensive. Additionally, the level of reliability and accuracy of manually performing these processes are low. In the past few decades, companies have incorporated technological advancements into food processing equipment resulting in reliable, accurate, automated and cost-effective methods of performing these processes. While there is no doubt about the benefits it offers, since the equipment is a combination of various mechanical, electrical and computer systems working together, it has an expensive cost price. Hence, companies that manufacture and supply these advanced food processing systems are always on the lookout for effective ways to optimize the cost of their already created machines or the ones to be developed. Marel is one such company that manufactures food processing systems and is working on cost optimizing their products. This thesis will focus on cost optimizing one of Marel’s products or machines by looking into design for manufacturing methods.
