Abstract
This master thesis aims to answer how to work recovery-oriented as a music therapist with clients with dual diagnosis. In an interpretive ontology and phenomenological and constructivist epistemology the study uses a case example as empiric evidence to investigate this question. The context of the case is a community health setting where the focus is on activities and social gatherings with recovery and rehabilitation as goals rather than the treatment of the clients. The method of the study is a microanalytical approach with inspiration from Lawrence Ferrara’s phenomenological analysis of music and Mercédès Pavlicevic’s Musical Interaction Rating scale (schizophrenia) referred to as MIR(S). The scientific software program ELAN is used as a tool for these analyses. The results from the analysis show that the client in the case example has a high level of musical skills. The musical collaboration between the music therapist and the client is a combination of songwriting, improvisation and music education. Different aspects of music therapy and recovery for clients with dual diagnosis is discussed. It is concluded, that more research is needed in this field of practice in order to establish more knowledge, as well as an evidence based music therapy practice with this target group.
