Abstract
This research paper explores how recognition and hostmanship effect users in a business context. The research question in this paper is: What knowledge about hostmanship's role in facilitating recognizition and community can be derived from the case: ”Den Gode By”. Through the literature-review a definition of hostmanship and recognition is found and applied to create four criteries for the concept of recognizing hostmanship. A casestudy was conducted to test these criteria by observing the existence of the phenomena related to them. The casestudy subsisted of a ethnographic mapping of activities and interactions combined with retrospective interviews. The mapping follows Christian Fumz who acts as a host in the casestudy. Futhermore the study will include users-interview about their experiences of the host and the community in the case. Their input will be used in designsessions with the host. To summarize the results the paper concludes with a discussion of the ramification of the casestudy. In the specific case the paper finds multiple examples of recognizing hostmanship, confirming the existence of the concept in a businesscontext. The role of the host in the case is to be the administrator for the location and at the same time to facilitate the community. The host is able to draw upon his relations with the users to facilitate recognition and relations between the users. Through the designsessions this ability of the host to activate their relation with the users is translated to solve challenges of the online community.
