Each summer Aalborg University’s answer to a science center, Universitarium, attracts visitors who come to experience scientific topics being explained in a funny and exciting manner. Behind the slogan ”Science that changes your world” lies the spirit of Universitarium, which purpose is to demonstrate how science affects our everyday lives.
Currently Universitarium is housed in the Utzon Center at the Aalborg Harbourfront, but there is a desire for Universitarium to acquire its own building in the future. This project is based on just this desire, and a design proposal based on Universitariums real wishes and demands for a future building has been prepared.
The design proposal for the new Universitarium is placed on the site of the recently closed Tivoli Karolinelund. With a location between the harbourfront and the future park, a spectacular building that emphasizes the style of Universitarium and contributes to the cultural context has been created.
In the design, emphasis has been put on creating a tectonic solution where the building structure contributes to the architectural expression, and where a visible structure helps highlight the tectonics.
