Title: Adolescents’ problematic use of digital media – a proposition to change the development of students’ digital literacy in the high school reform.

Problem: Adolescents face challenges in the use of digital media, which can result in a problematic use of these media. One of the consequences of a problematic use is that it contributes to the development of stress. Moreover, the government wishes to develop adolescents’ digital literacy by developing their skills and competence by implementing more use of technology in class. The implementation has contributed to the problematic use, as adolescents’ face the challenges of private distractions on digital media during class. Thus, there is a need for a behavioral and structural change.

Aim: To establish a propositional change for the development of digital literacy in the high school reform through the development of a complex intervention. The proposition in addition with the complex intervention should contribute to the students’ achievement of a balanced use of digital media, which should lead to a reduction in the occurrence of stress among adolescents.

Method: The complex intervention is based on the Medical Research Council’s Framework. In addition, a program theory has been applied to form an overview of the intervention. Two systematic reviews have been conducted for the development of the complex intervention. A theoretical basis has been applied for the understanding of the processes between the intervention and the results, which in the end has contributed to the propositional change for the development of digital literacy in the high school reform.

Result: The result is a proposition for a complex intervention which should be conducted in an educational context. The activities in the complex intervention consists of answering a questionnaire in addition to receiving information about problematic use of digital media, which aims to give the students an understanding of their behavior. The students should receive information and engage in a classroom discussion of possible behavioral changings methods, which aims to give the students the resources for a behavioral change. In addition, the students should engage in classroom discussion and reflect on their motivation for change. Furthermore, the evaluation of the complex intervention should be used in a decision for the implementation of the propositional change for the development of digital media in the high school reform.

Conclusion: The propositional change to the development of digital literacy in the high school reform consists of a supplement that involves a behavioral aspect of digital literacy. The addition of a behavioral aspect aims to give the adolescents a prerequisite to achieve a balanced use of digital media, which should contribute to reducing the occurrence of stress in the target group.
