In-career transitions through an athletic career are associated with certain difficulties. How athletes deal with differences linked to transitions can eventually determine, whether the athlete is successful or simply fails to adapt to new surroundings (Samuel & Tenenbaum 2011). In this case, four football players from the second-best football league in Denmark (1. Division) promotes for the first time to the best Danish football league (Superliga). Thus, the purpose of this study is to investigate how a transition/promotion from second-best to the best Danish football league for the first time, can have an impact on a footballers Athletic Identity (AI). This is done by interviewing football players about the changes in relation to the transition. The data was transcribed and a thematic analysis was used to identified themes, that could have an impact on footballers Athletic Identities. This study concludes that both positive and negative outcomes are linked to this transition. The themes in this study, which have an impact on footballers AI’s are; Level of competition within a team, Trust from the coach, Better football teams, Mental pressure and Promotion. Some of the abovementioned themes are both associated with positive and negative outcomes of AI. However, the positive outcomes of AI in this transition build around the fact that athletes develop confidence and a stronger sense of self due to; Level of competition in a team, Trust from the coach and from the Promotion itself. In contrast, the negative outcomes of AI in this transition comes down to the fact that athletes struggle with showing their football skills due to; Level of competition in a team, Better opposition football teams and the Mental pressure. The purpose of this study was also to highlight challenges and hereby give coaches, managers and football players better chances of succeeding at a higher level, by drawing attention to what could confront football players, as they go through a transition/promotion. Further research is required in order to fully understand, how athletes should deal with challenges related to in-career transitions.
