The aim ofthis project has been to develop an
early prototype of a system which teaches
players the mathematical subject of algebra
within the context of an emergent narrative to
create continuation desire.
To develop this early prototype, research was
conducted on the concepts of the mathematical
subject algebra, transmediation, emergent
narrative in interactive storytelling and virtual
environments, and narrative elements such as
Author-Audience Distrance, Abstract-
Didascallic Continuum, Intellegibility and
Closure and Goal of the System.
After the implementation this early prototype
was tested for continuation desire and possible
improvements in the participants' skills of
algebra. The results of this test show indications
of both improvements in the participants' skills
of algebra, but also that a high number of
participants enjoyed playing the prototype and
both had the desire to continue playing and to
play the prototype again. The test, however,
shows that the prototype still needs work to
make users keep playing, and there is room for
both technical and usability improvements.
