Hospice for children was introduced in Denmark in 2015, with the opening of Lukas Huset in Copenhagen. In 2018 it was decided that this should also be the case in Jutland, and a hospice for children should be placed in Rønde on Djursland in connection with the excising Hospice Djursland. The name of the hospice will be Strandbakkehuset (Region Midtjylland, 2018)

The goal of this project is to design a hospice for children and youth. We aim to create space that is designed with focus on easing the illness for the patient, optimising the quality of life for all family members and accommodating needs for both the ill, relatives and staff.

The design of the hospice takes offset in the theory of healing- and palliative architecture with a sustainable design approach based on DGNB system. This in combination with factual knowledge derived from relevant cases and soft values coming from the experiences of a family with an ill child. Along with these design parameters and a integrated process of technicality, the building will fulfil the energy demands of the building regulation’s 2020 and set the frame of a well-functioning, home-like and family-minded children’s hospice.
