Through the concept spiritual architecture the goal was to design a plus energy-apartment building where the apartments would promote spiritual living for the residents. The wish was that the apartments would not encourage the residents to spend time and money on furnishing and decorating their dwelling, but where the architecture itself would give adventure and in addition act as art. The atmosphere of the dwelling where seen as the main tool in order to achieve this – manifested through the materials, the light, the flow and layout of the apartments and by built-in furniture. The layout of the apartments where chosen in order to promote individualism and to have the opportunity of renting rooms out. This resulted in 30 different apartment-plans in a 6-floor building. All the apartments have one or more balconies to the southeast in addition to a winter garden to the west. 30% of the façade are windows and, due to the zigzag shape of the building, all the apartments get lights from all four corners of the world. The shape of the building also helps keeping the temperature and energy frame down. Provided with a heat pump, the building has an energy frame of 17.9 kWh/m2 year, which is below the requirement of 20 kWh/m2 year for BR2020. The building is an active house, which means it is required to produce more energy than it consumes – in its lifetime. With solar cells on the roof, the south façade and in shutters in the west façade, the building produces 12.3 kWh/m2. In order to produce more solar cells can also be added to balconies and the west façade.
