The field of adult education in Denmark has expanded drastically. A recent example is the so called VEU reform, which may be translated into Reform of Adult and Further Education, from 1999. The reform expresses a need in society for a general improvement on the qualifications of adults through lifelong learning. How may learning for life be ensured through adult education? First step on the road is to provide adults with tools that enable them to acquire new knowledge and take responsibility for their own learning. The demand for more education is followed by the demand for flexibility as to when, where and how each individual person may study. Information technology creates the possibility of a learning environment that goes beyond traditional teaching in classes where people have to be present at the same time and place. The use of information and communication technologies for learning independent of time and place is called e-learning. As a teacher of adults learning ICT I have experienced the need for an e-learning product for searching the web for information. The object of this thesis is to examine the way in which a web based learning product must be designed to further the possibilities of adults to search the web for information in an appropriate way. The basis of the design is my knowledge of the target group as well as theories of learning and didactics. The group of Trade and Adult Education at RUC have carried out two research projects on how adult education must be developed to meet the needs for general qualification. Starting from the results of this research I examine the conceptions of learning processes and learning styles. I list some didactic requirements which the learning product must meet and after analysing an existing e-learning product for searching the web for information, I design a conceptual prototype and describe the contents, form and functionalities. The development of a web based learning product is an iterative process in which users are involved at an early stage. I plan and carry out a usability test in which users test the prototype. I involve two methods in the test, Think Aloud and a succeeding interview. The collected data is analysed and I conclude, which measures must be taken in the further development of the learning product. The thesis consists of two parts, a report on theories and methods and the initial version of the prototype, which can be viewed on www.minkit.dk/speciale1.
