Breast cancer is the most common cancer among Danish women. Based on the improved screening, earlier and improved diagnosis, improved treatment more and more breast cancer patients either live with or have had a cancer diagnosis. The treatment offered to the women is a combination of surgery, chemotherapy and radiation therapy. Cancer and the treatments may result in numerous complications. These complications are called late effects. The late effects can be of physical, mental and psychosocial nature. Up to 60 % of the women who have been treated for breast cancer develop late effects that have implications for their everyday lives. The growing number of breast cancer survivors requires an increased focus on issues related to management of late effects in everyday life.

The aim of this project is to investigate which opportunities and limitations, there is to help the breast cancer survivors with late effects back to the everyday life.
The design of the study is a case study. There are generated empirical data through three interviews with a phenomenological approach. These interviews are analyzed with "empowerment " as theoretical frame of reference. There has been conducted a systematic litterateur search, where after the articles have been analyzed. The results of the analysis will contribute to development of a proposal of change.
Proposal of change:
There should be implemented an electronic health plan “Sundhedsplan”, which through increased involvement and knowledge of the patient will lead to an increment of the breast cancer survivors ability to achieve empowerment to a better coping of the challenges in the everyday life related to the late effects.
The breast cancer survivors should be offered the possibility for participating in self-help groups, which have the purpose of increasing the breast cancer survivors coping of the everyday life example through reinforcement of the social network and exchange of experiences. This will increase the breast cancer survivors’ opportunity to achieve empowerment to a better coping of challenges related to the late effects..
It is a limitation that the breast cancer survivors do not get involved in the own course of disease. Implementing Sundhedsplanen will give an opportunity to an increment involvement of the breast cancer survivors.
The strength of the social network of the breast cancer survivors is crucial for, how the women empower in the everydaylife. Implementing of self-help groups will give the breast cancer survivors the opportunity to strengthen their social relations.
