4. term, Master of Learning Processes (Continuing education) (Continuing Education Programme (Master))
The purpose of this master project is to clarify an understanding of organizational coaching and to clarify how organizational coaching can be facilitated through the use of visual maps.
This is primarily based on the German sociologist Nicklas Luhmann's theory of social systems as well as studies of three cases from my organization.
An organization is a social system, and social systems consist according to Luhmann of communication. People are in Luhmann's understanding environment for social systems, not the focal point of these.
This is absolutely essential for the understanding of organizational coaching, presented in this master project. An organizational coach has communication as a central focus - not persons, neither employees, teams nor managers. He must coach the organization, which means dealing with highly complex communication processes.
Both a leader and an organizational coach have a role and function to fulfill in the organization. Where management is a key concept for the organization's leader, facilitation will be the central concept for an organizational coach.
The organizational coach must facilitate communication processes and establishment of interactionsystems. He must contribute to the establishment of certain communication-tracks in these systems. Organizational coaching is described as a meta-communicative track, which is designed to condition the communication on the basis of fundamental intentions of movement. Communication in interaction-systems primarily moves along other communication tracks, but this process must be continuously qualified meta-communicative.
The organizational coaching will also contribute meta-communicative to conditioning the communication of the entire organization.
Visual facilitation is an essential competence in organizational coaching. Visual maps contribute to facilitation of the communication processes by offering complexity, which according to Luhmann is the only way to reduce complexity. In the master project a varied use of visual maps are explored and evaluated. For example the visual maps offer sustained visual availability of given information and selections of used communication tracks, which gives the involved actors a common starting point for their individual understanding. But it is the communication that finally selects tracks and creates movement.

Through the master project a model for illustration of the organizational coaching-process is developed.
