4. term, Master of ICT and Learning (MIL) (Continuing education) (Continuing Education Programme (Master))
This Master thesis is on the subject of communication in asynchronous fo-rums used in work places and we present following problem: What furthers and what obstructs organizational use of asynchronous com-munication forums for problem solving? For the past three years we have observed the use of asynchronous communi-cation forums in study- and work relations. This has made us wonder why some organizations succeed in making asynchronous forums work while oth-ers do not. Our theoretical foundation is the theories of Nicklas Luhman, Etienne Wenger, Nonaka and Ciborra. We have analyzed two newsgroups and a conference in the Collaborative Vir-tual Workspace, named Virtual University (VU), which we have used during our studies. We have furthermore interviewed a number of employees of EUC-Nord, Hjørring, CVU Syd, Vordingborg and of Novo Nordisk Engineer-ing. We conclude that three conditions have to be fulfilled if the use of asynchro-nous forums is to succeed: There has to be a shared language, the participants must experience a shared space and time and the participants must share some basic suppositions of their world.
