Lava flow is a threat to settlements in many countries where one of them is Iceland. There have been made many plans for how to minimize the damage that an eruption can make but there has not been focus on where the lava is flowing in these plans.
This project handles therefore about how lava flow can be modelled. First, the threat from volcanoes is analysed and then other approaches to model lava are analysed.
On basis of that a new method and then a program to model lava is developed. The program is based on Cellular Automata and is programmed in the programming language Python.
When the program is made there is executed a case study for Grindavík in Southwest Iceland where the program is tested and there is analysed if the town of Grindavík or other build areas within the municipality could be threatened by lava.
Finally, the Spatial plans for Grindavík are analysed to see if there are needs of modification of the Master plan for the municipality.
