The main focus in this project is to examine what complicated grief is and what im-pact the postmodern society has on the development of complicated grief. This will be done in an attempt to find out whether there is a link between the environment where the postmodern western individual lives and the development of complicated grief. It is a priority for this project to create new knowledge regarding complicated grief and how it is influenced by the post modern society. New knowledge might un-cover a solution to prevent further increase in the prevalence of complicated grief.
To examine whether the postmodern society has an impact on the development of complicated grief and how it may be prevented, the project starts by reviewing cur-rent literature in the area of complicated grief as a follow-up on previous 9. seme-sters project about grief. This will lead to an explanation of what complicated grief is and why it develops. To do so, data in this section is primarily from the clinical psy-chological- and evolutionary psychological point of view. Afterwards, the postmo-dern western society will be reviewed, in order to highlight which environment the postmodern western individual lives in, and will primarily include updated data from social psychology. The two sections of complicated grief and the postmodern western society, will lead to an analysis of which influence the postmodern western society has on the development of complicated grief. This is to examine whether or not the society, where the postmodern western individual lives, increases the individual's risk of developing complicated grief. Afterwards it is discussed if and how it is pos-sible to prevent the development of complicated grief. This is discussed throughout an examination of what is already done in the area of complicated grief intervention, followed up by an examination of how to optimize existing complicated grief inter-vention-methods. Furthermore, this section will lead up to the overall conclusion of this project, where it has been concluded, that the postmodern western society tend to increase some risk factors in relation to developing complicated grief. Furthermo-re, it is concluded, that there are no complicated grief intervention-methods which has been proven useful in preventing the development of complicated grief at this time. I regard, a new complicated grief intervention-method named Emotion Focused Grief Therapy (EFGT) is suggested along with use of the group-based intervention-technique used in existing ‘Bereavement Support Group’.
