The basis of the thesis is a central issue within contemporary organisations ICT-mediated knowledge sharing. To be able to share knowledge across geographical distances, independent of time and/or place, has become a decisive factor to many organisations. This is due to the fact that today knowledge is seen as the most important collective advantage to the organisation as well as the society in general it is perceived to be the foundation for survival, as a resource that in time with the globalisation reaches beyond time and place. From the beginning we were of the opinion that it did matter to the effect of knowledge sharing how one was able to access knowledge and what one could do with a possible gained knowledge. Furthermore we believed that a persons possibilities to act according to the gained knowledge would depend on what technologies the person in case had access to and was able to employ, and were therefore interested in conducting a study into which forms of ICT-mediating that could support which forms of knowledge sharing. Through our everyday worklife we found that this new buzz word was connected to a heterogeneous semantics, a linguistic precision of the term as the foundation for a nuanced discussion was lacking and needed. The focus of the thesis is therefore to offer a contribution to the development of a conception or a framework of ICT-mediated knowledge sharing, providing the backdrop for being able to relate to this concept. This takes place through distinct clarifications of the terms: knowledge, knowledge sharing, ICT, and ICT-mediation. The thesis is a theoretical, analytical thesis- all definitions have therefore been drawn up on the basis of chosen theoretical contributions.
