Today a very limited knowledge of the aesthetic durability of white concrete exists. Different projects have started in order to achieve better knowledge of this - one of them is Whiadur, which initiated this project. In Whiadur an instrument making it possible to accelerate aesthetic ageing was invented. Shape, placing, detailing and surface structure affects the aesthetic durability of a concrete surface, and in this project it has been investigated what influence the microstructure and impermeability of the concrete have. To do this freshly cast specimens and aesthetic accelerated specimens have been used. On these specimens the porosity, capillarity and water permeability is measured and the roughness of the surface is evaluated. Results from these tests have then been compared with color measurements in order to be able to predict the aesthetic durability of white concrete. The results from the experimental investigation do not give a unique conclusion on how the microstructure and impermeability of the concrete affects on the aesthetic durability. However, changes in color tend to be more visible if the concrete has high capillarity or a rough surface.
