The myth of the 'Lost Generation' entered British collective memomry during the late twenties and early thirties, in part due to the flood of 'war books' which from 1928 onwards thematised World War One as a brutal waste of a generation of young Britons. Disillusionment with the present highlighted the meagre results of the war to the British public, and therefore the myth was accepted and elevated to the status of historical 'truth'.
