In Århus Municipality the visions of the municipality’s future are high. The aim is 75,000 new citizens, 50,000 new dwellings and jobs, and 10,000 new student places as well as a new light rail connecting downtown Århus and the northern suburbs is on the drawing board. These aspects are the motive for this master thesis, which challenges the municipal visions of sustainable and station related urban development with the light rail as catalyst for urban growth. Based on a theoretical framework regarding urban structures and traffic, elucidating Århus within local, municipal and regional context, the project is documented through a disposition plan illustrating the development of the first stage of the light rail layout, and two design scenarios illustrating the development of new sub-centres along the rail. These two design scenarios show how tools as Transit Oriented Development, station related urban development, and mixed use can create dense, beautiful, and diverse sub-centres in relation to both build and un-build contexts. These designs question if areas of new urban growth in relation to the light rail is realistic and which consequences it may cause, and if it is the right answer to Århus Municipality.
