Abstract
Title: A study of the knowledge base for preventing maternal mortality in developing countries - A literature review.
Aim: The aim of this project was to investigate the knowledge base for interventions addressing reduction maternal mortality in developing countries. In addition, this project also aimed to establish a basis for decision-making for the development of future interventions addressing the reduction of maternal mortality rate in sub-Saharan Africa.
Method: In this project, a systematic literature search has been performed, for the collection of data, which was further processed in a literature review, through a synthesis and a narrative analysis strategy.
Result: The results of this literature review showed that training and gaining of competence by the traditional birth attendants had a significant reducing effect on maternal mortality rate. Similarly, it was found that women's groups, where topics related to pregnancy and childbirth were discussed, could have a significant reducing effect on the maternal mortality rate.
Conclusion: The basis for decision-making for interventions targeted at reduction of maternal mortality, is seen to consist of training and gaining of competence by the traditional birth attendants. Likewise, the basis for decision-making consists of women's groups where topics related to pregnancy and childbirth were discussed. This knowledge can be used in a decision-making basis for future interventions aimed at reducing maternal mortality rates.
