4. term, Social Work, Master (Master Programme)
The thesis provides important new research in a field where there is a lack of documented knowledge – namely to the understanding of how voluntary social work contributes to the treatment of adults suffering from the long-term effects of childhood sexual abuse. The findings leave no doubt that the voluntary social work provides significant help to a vulnerable group in great need hereof. The objectives of the thesis are twofold – firstly to map out what services are available at 7 Danish centers for adults suffering from long-term effects of childhood sexual abuse and secondly to examine to what extent the voluntary social work at these centers is contributing to the overall treatment of the long-terms effects of childhood sexual abuse. The study is based on qualitative interviews with 19 employees and volunteers as well as 9 users connected to 7 of 21 Danish centers for adults with experiences of childhood sexual abuse, alongside the informational material produced by the centers. The analysis is founded on the principles of grounded theory. In particular, it is inspired by Jens Guldager’s discussion of the concept methods in social work, and the variables and dimensions that are prolific for research treating methods in social work and in evaluation of those methods. The findings show that the voluntary social work in this area is based in general on a consensus of the fact that adults suffering from the long-term effects of childhood sexual abuse are vulnerable and in need of help. The 7 centers examined in this thesis, however, have various perceptions of the specific needs of the users, and consequently offer a variety of different counseling services. Overall, four services have been identified: 1) counseling, 2) therapy, 3) self-help groups, 4) drop-in center and social activities. The centers primarily provide the users with the feeling of safety, understanding and the possibility to tell ‘their story’. In particular the counseling aims to locate and strengthen the users own resources in the specific situation as well as long-term. Both users and employees/ volunteers experience that the counseling sessions help users create a prospect for the future through counseling, getting advice and reflecting themselves in the volunteers. The therapy intends to assist the users in changing their patterns of behavior and to work through unhandled emotions and lacking body awareness. Both users and employees/ volunteers experience that the therapy does help the users to work through the emotions connected with the sexual abuse and learn to create new patterns of behavior through the adaptation of specific tools. The self-help groups are set to allow the users to create tools to help them on an everyday basis through mutual support and sharing their experiences. Both users and employees/ volunteers experience that the self-help groups grant the users a greater degree of inner strength that helps them manage their lives. Last but not least, the drop-in center and the social activities intend to give the users the possibility to informally meet both volunteers and other users with a deep understanding of the long-term effects of childhood sexual abuse. Both users and employees/ volunteers experience that these services help the users feel less ‘different’ and strengthen their social competencies. The findings thus leave no doubt that the voluntary social work provides significant help to a vulnerable group in great need thereof. On the basis of the conclusions it is the view of the authors, that it is evident that an overall evaluation of all the voluntary social work with adults suffering from long-term effects of childhood sexual abuse can be conducted by applying the dimensions and variables identified in this thesis. Furthermore, the thesis concludes that the volunteers use a great variety of knowledge in their work. Consequently, an analysis of how the knowledge base affects the behavior of the volunteers would bring interesting new perspectives to the understanding of voluntary social work with adults suffering with long-term effects of childhood sexual abuse.
