In this master’s thesis we use the actor-network theory and theories of organizational culture to examine how the Faroese construction industry handles various forms of digitization in a cultural and traditional context. Faroese society is in many ways shaped by its small size. The players in the country’s construction industry know one another well, and oral agreements are used extensively. In addition, knowledge sharing is done implicitly to a large extent. Digitization requires knowledge to be in the form of explicit data and formalized in a structure that fits the digital technology. This thesis is divided into three main sections, each examining a different type of digitization: the project design tool, Revit; boundary objects in various project management file hosting systems; and different file formats. The analysis is centred on how the necessity for knowledge to be explicit and in a formalized structure runs contrary to Faroese traditional working methods. The challenges of implementing digitisation in the Faroese construction industry are considerable, even to the extent that digitisation itself becomes a separate area of expertise.
