The industrial symbiosis, where industries engage in a mutual symbiotic exchange of waste products, has since the emergence of the concept been known for its multiple ad-vantages. In spite of this, the industrial symbiosis is characterised by a practically absent implementation. One of the reasons, for the lack of implementation, is by the literature described as the absence of a coordinating body, which can act as a catalyst in the proc-ess of developing, but also functioning, of an industrial symbioses network. The impor-tance of a coordinating body, in a Danish context, is poorly described. A closer analysis of the importance of a coordinating body, for the development and functioning of the indus-trial symbioses in Denmark, is therefore interesting. This study focuses on the importance of a coordinating body, for the development and functioning of the industrial symbioses in the port of Hanstholm and Hirtshals. Based on the two possible coordinating bodies ’Havneforum’ og ’Hirtshals Havn’, these are tested against a range of features of the work of a coordinating body. It is found that the possible coordinating bodies had no influence on the development of the industrial symbioses programmes in the two ports. For the development and func-tioning of future symbioses programmes in Hanstholm, there is a great organizational potential in the capacity of Hanstholm Havneforum. On the other hand, in Hirtshals, Hirt-shals Havn fails on all fields related to the work of a coordinating body. Therefore Hirt-shals Havn can not be seen as a coordination body for industrial symbioses programmes in Hirtshals.
