The present study examines a qualitative study on the danish peoples ignorance on The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The Sustainable Development Goals, otherwise known as the SDGs and Global Goals, were adopted in 2015 by 193 nations. They are a universal call to action to protect the planet and ensure that all people enjoy peace and prosperity. It is the most ambitious project in the history of humankind, and provide clear guidelines and targets for all countries to adopt in accordance with their own priorities. These 17 Goals with 169 associated targets work in the spirit of pragmatism and partnership to make the right choices now, to improve life, in a sustainable way, for future generations.
What is likely to be the greatest challenge humanity has ever faced, is probably also the most important communication challenge of our time. Denmark is globally ranked as number two on achieving the Sustainable Development Goals, which is odd, since 89 percent of the country’s population either have never heard of the goals or do not know what they are all about. Therefore, we are questioning, who got the responsibility to inform the danish population about the goals? Theoretically, the thesis is integrated within the field of discourse studies with critical discourse analysis(CDA) as it’s primary theoretical and methodological approach. The proposition of CDA is to make a linguistically oriented sociological analysis. New studies show, that most of the danish people gets their news through digital medias, why we chose to do a comparison of three articles from most-read danish news media www.dr.dk/nyheder, representing each one of the three dimensions: economic, social and environmental, in achieving sustainable development. Through an linguistically analysis, we are analysing the representation of the goals in the danish news media coverage with the aim of detecting which discourses appears.
Seeing discourse as social practice enables us to combine the perspectives of structure and action, which is why we in conclusion are reflecting on, how people getting to know about the Sustainable Development Goals. News medias and news values have a major impact on which and how we experience and read about our society and especially politics in the postmodern society. It is not only a question about when and how the politicians choose to speak about them, the danish news medias do also take a big part in how to get people to know about the goals. In general, news medias and news values have a major impact on which and how we experience and read about our society and especially politics in the postmodern society, because of the news media's power to determine how much prominence they want give a story.
