This report is dealing with different methods of vibration control in flexible structures with a pedestrian bridge as basis. A deterministic pedestrian model is developed based on a review of the present literature. Passive damping is applied to the bridge by use of a tuned mass damper and optimal tuning parameters are determined. Active multi-modal control is introduced by adding a control force to the tuned mass damper and different control theories, pole placement and optimal control, are evaluated. A proposed control theory combining pole placement and integral control is implemented in a test set-up consisting of a cantilever beam with a piezo electric actuator. Finally, pedestrians crossing the bridge is simulated and the treated vibration control methods are compared.
