This thesis is about young people with refugees and immigrant backgrounds, especially Somalis who drop out of vocational schools. Statistically speaking, a large proportion of young people with a minority origin do not complete the vocational schools. In this context documents underscore in the field that the young people with Somali backgrounds are the most vulnerable. Therefore I have been in fieldwork at a technical school in Copenhagen to conduct research. Here, part of the studies in the area also document that parents' cooperation with the young people's parents can prevent the young people's drop-out.
If you look at the dropouts of young people here, many studies point out that these young people have challenges in reading and writing Danish. However, it is also the case that young people have difficulty finding internships. This thesis contains an interview with two parents, two young people with Somali backgrounds and a teacher in vocational school.
This fieldwork was done to be able to uncover the challenges of young Somalis in vocational schools and how to help them through parent collaboration. The two young people one of them have dropped out of education, whereas the other one is still studying. The problems the young somali people face is that they have a hard time getting an internship. They also feel excluded in their schools, because they do not know the danish language well enough. Furthermore these young people and their parents in context of the society are a subject to discrimination. This thesis also looks at the young somali people’s parents who also face troubles when it comes to the job market. Being outside of the job market, many somali families are in a vulnerable position in society. In terms of the parent corporation with the minority families, studies show that it can be challenging because the families do not speak language and most of them do not understand the culture in the school system. This results in difficulties between the parents and the teachers in the parents' cooperation with the school.
