This thesis investigates motivation, commitment and well-being in high school education. The problems in the educational system can be considered as gradually rising, more students are dropping out, more are uncommitted and people generally do not participate in the teaching, where it becomes more complicated to be a teacher as the students do not participate and attend the teaching. It is not considered by social scientists that it is the youth's laziness that underlies this development. The reason must be found in the competitive state's education ideal and performance culture as well as economic logic that reduce people to less than what they are. Students have become lonely and feel very individualized, where it has been difficult for many to grasp what is happening on their education. The purpose is to see if there is anything that can be learned from a concrete example that suggests having some very promising results concerning some of these current issues that exist in society, but especially in the education system.
The education is called HF-Cold Hawaii and have found an interesting way to integrate high school with surf, youth and culture, physical activities, nature, water and sea opportunities. All students live on a surf collective and appreciate the value of working-, learning together and helping each other as they can jointly achieve the goals of education. The education also provides competence development and relevant quality for the labour market in the form of working with experiences, events and branding within the tourism industry or other companies, as well as learning to create unique customer experiences and more.
The thesis is developed by an idealistic research method, where both social constructivists analyzes will be used, as well as methods including participant observation, field study, semi-structured interviews, qualitative methods of analysis that interpret social reality. All of this will be interpreted based on theories about education, learning, behavioural and educational sociology formulated by Pierre Bourdieu, Knud Illeris and Albert Bandura, respectively, who have all given different suggestions on how social reality can be interpreted and provide insight into how motivation, human actions can be interpreted. Moreover, formulated a holistic learning model as well as social learning. The analytical findings and interpretations of the empirical data will be collected and eventually evaluated what can be interpreted as having exemplary value about a broader context. where, in short, it is found that there is much to be learned by letting young people live together and have an active lifestyle while they study.
