This thesis examines temporary use as a planning instrument in the geographical context of Copenhagen. The concept of the tool has been changing for the last few decades and has arisen as sustainable way of reintegrating old industrial areas into new neighborhoods that fulfill the needs of modern urban dwellers.

I want to emphasize the change and transformation that temporary use has undergone the last couple decades through six qualitative interviews with city planners, architects, politicians, landowners and creative and innovative actors.

From the interaction between my empirical basis and the thesis’ adopted theoretical framework, I want to stress that the temporary use has obtained political and corporate forms. These new forms mean more severe activities with higher economical investments and a shift in the field of actors.

I show this through the case of Refshaleøen where I highlight the established temporary use. I view the established temporary use by focusing on a yet-to-be-integrated mobile housing project. Still the project shed light on the form of placemaking and the values they want to transmit to place and places.

I conclude that because of a stretch in time-space continuum and commodification of temporary use, there must be a consideration about how we distinguish temporary uses. Therefore, I propose the concept of orchestrated chaos, which define the type of placemaking and planning on Refshaleøen. I want to argue on the basis of the concept, that original temporary uses were driven by the thought of community and activity, while the temporary uses in the planning of orchestrated chaos, is with a different intent. Namely, the ambition to reintegrate the area by a manifold of narratives.
