This work explores the walking experience during the Covid-19 pandemic in Nørrebro, Copenhagen. The concept of ‘mobilities in situ’ is applied to qualitative walk-along interviews to uncover the intrinsic experience of walking. Sensemaking is then used to evaluate the improvement and decline of social capital in relation to walking during the pandemic based on the vocabulary of ‘mobilities in situ’.
The work concludes with findings of a changed walking situation mainly due to behavior changes related to interpersonal distance. Further no significant change in social capital has been uncovered. The work concludes with six key learnings for the profession of urban planning from the pandemic for the improvement of the public realm in cities.
