This is a master's thesis from Aalborg University covering the Master of Arts in Learning and Innovative Changes at the Institute for Learning and Philosophy.

The project is a case study of the micro level of Klitmøller focusing on personal observation and focus group interviews of the stories of six HF students, who started their studies at the new HF Cold Hawaii education in Klitmøller in August 2014.

The content will be a description, understanding and cultural snapshot of the students actions and behaviour in the actuel context.
My interest for the students is based on their geographical choice of education. This is the reason why I will examine their motives. In conjunction with this, I will focus especially on how the students experience Klitmøller in relation to social capital. As a starting point I will place the concept with respect to the understanding of Robert Putnam's work "Bowling alone - The Collapse and Revival of American Community".
I will try to follow his footsteps, and be inspired by the sources he himself was inspired by. At the same time it is my intention to relate critically to his theory, and use this thesis to test his approach to the concept social capital in relation to the students.

Which types of network do the students from HF Cold Hawaii in Klitmøller create, and how can the understanding of networks be used in relation to Putnam's approach on social capital, and at the same time promote the society of Klitmøller?

With Putnam's theoretical approach there will be focus on his distinction between 'bonding' and 'bridging' social capital. These to concepts, bonding and bridging social capital, will in this thesis have meaning to the work with the analysis and understanding of the networking structure of the students.
In his project the operationalization of social capital has been made qualitatively by using focus group interviews. In these interviews a number of questions have been asked to the students with regard to their network and reciprocity in Klitmøller.

The idea behind the two mentioned qualitatively methods of the project is the desire to examine the lifeworld of the students. A fundamental element in building the method in this project is hermeneutics, which will be used in the transcription work of the interview. In the analysis of the project it showed, that to the students it often was about being together at the inn.
Therefore it can be concluded that the students form a network like the concept of Putnam's bonding network. A bonding network, according to Putnam, serves the purpose that the students can mobilise solidarity between each other. In line with the mentioned theory in the project, I therefore see an opening for more bridging network in the town. In conjunction with this, there is a good opportunity for more generalised reciprocity in Klitmøller, which will result in a more efficient community.
