The aim of this thesis is to explore how, the interaction between vulnerable young people and the occupation system, is experienced by the young people involved. Furthermore, the intention of the thesis is to examine if possible barriers in the interaction between a young person and the occupation system originates from translocale relations’ influence in the local setting. The local setting for the examination - Route 42, is an extraordinary effort from Aalborg municipality’s Job Centre. Route 42 was established in the hopes of reaching out and helping a group of young people, where efforts to help have been unsuccessful or had a minimum impact before, moving closer to being part of the job market. The two examination questions mentioned above are united in the thesis’ research question. The aim is to produce possible explanations regarding whether barriers in the interaction between a young person and the occupation system can be explained by the framing, where the efforts of social work has its foundation. The theoretical framework, which this thesis is inspired by, is from Dorothy Smiths Institutional ethnography. It focuses on actual people’s everyday lives and her research is used to map out some of the cultural preconditions and unknown problematics that translocale relations have in the interaction between citizens and institutions in society.
In the analysis of the empiric material, Jürgen Habermas’ lifeworld and system concept are included. Furthermore Zygmunt Bauman and Clifford Geertz’ concept of culture and Geertz’ thick description is used. Selected parts of Norman Faircloughs critical discourse analysis are used both to identify the discourses in the interview and the reform regarding unemployment benefits. Additionally Mitchell Deans’ governmentality analysis is used to identify selected ruling relations in the reform agreement. These theoretical notions are selected with the purpose of outlining, identifying and explaining the complexity presented in the research, to answer the problem formulation.
The examination identifies that Dorothy Smiths unknown problematic is that the barriers found in the lifeworld, can be derived from the fact that the communicative action that is pursued, first and foremost takes place in the meeting between systems because of the conditions of the lifeworld.
