Every year, teams from universities all over the world compete at the Shell TM Eco-marathon in efficiency-focused challenges with their own car designs. In previous editions, Aalborg University’s team participated with a fuel-cell electric car, the Ecoracer, with an interior permanent magnet synchronous machine (IPMSM) and a very basic control algorithm. This project focuses on designing optimal controllers so that the motor’s efficiency is increased. First, an extended model of the IPMSM is derived to include power losses, as well as a model of the Ecoracer’s dynamics to have a more accurate estimation of the conditions during the competition. The effects of system constraints are also analyzed. Then, two efficient control approaches are proposed: maximum-torque-per-ampere (MTPA) and maximum-efficiency-per-ampere (MEPA). Field weakening (FW) is also considered to extend the speed range of the car. Furthermore, non-linear controllers are designed to substitute the former linear controllers and achieve better robustness. Finally, the system is tested in simulation for two realistic driving patterns. Results prove that the efficiency-focused algorithms provide a much better performance than the former i d = 0 method, while the difference between them is not significant.
