In this project, the focus is on development of online MPC for optimal control pumping stations in a water distribution network. The objectives of MPC are to minimize the operational cost and the pressure variations at consumer end. The water network considered in this project is a grid type network with 2 pumping stations, 2 consumers and 1 elevated reservoir. With changing price of electricity through a day, MPC aims to operate pumps during the low-price hours to fill the elevated reservoir and during high-price hours the water in the elevated reservoir is used to fulfill consumer demands. A non-linear model of the network is developed using graph theory. The model is linearized around an operating point for the development of MPC. The MPC is implemented on a supervisory control layer, which sends optimal control commands to a local controller which controls the operation of the pumps. A water network is setup in the smart water laboratory. The developed MPC is tested in a simulation environment as well as on the laboratory network. The MPC performance is compared with on/off controller.
